Q: What is my service day?
A: The entire City of Milford’s trash and recycling is collected on Thursdays.
Q: My garbage was not picked up – why?
A: Occasionally, crews miss a house. Sometimes the crews are not able to collect the material safely or efficiently. Sometimes they simply do not see the material. If there is a problem with the material that prevents collection, an educational tag (orange sticker) will be left behind to let you know the problem. If you have received an educational tag, your garbage will not be picked up until your next scheduled garbage day. If you haven’t received an educational tag and you placed the material at the curb by 5:00 a.m., please leave the items that were missed at the curb and contact the Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator, please include your name, address, a contact number and the items that were missed.
Q: How do I dispose of an appliance with Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs or Freon)?
A: Rumpke will pick up these large items (such as freezers, air conditioners, refrigerators), however, a certified technician must remove the Freon. For home service, the contact would be Day’s Appliances Repair Heating & Air Conditioning Company at 513-745-9130 or for delivery service, the contact would be the Clermont County Engineer’s Office at 513-732-7775. After the Freon is removed, a certification label must be affixed to the appliance and must be visible to the driver. Please ensure the doors are secured shut or removed. Rumpke would appreciate it if you would call the Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator to let them know you will be placing a large item at the curb. The Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinate will provide Rumpke with the information and this will allow their drivers to plan accordingly.
Q: How do I dispose of other large items?
A: Rumpke will pick up these large items (i.e. washing machines, dryers, stoves, ranges, grills, lawnmower, and water heater etc). Rumpke would appreciate it if you would call the Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator to let them know you will be placing a large item at the curb. The Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinate will provide Rumpke with the information and this will allow their drivers to plan accordingly. Large items may also be donated to many organizations including St Vincent De Paul at 513-831-3353, Goodwill at 513-771-4800, and The Salvation Army at 513-351-3457.
Q: How do I dispose of my carpet, paneling or wood?
A: Items that will not fit into a waste container should be broken down into 4ft. long bundles not weighing more than 75 lbs. Each bundle should be secured for easy handling.
Q: How do I dispose of hazardous materials?
A: Please do not place batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, tires, liquids, paint, propane tanks, gas mowers, combustible materials or any materials deemed hazardous in your garbage containers or out for collection period. To dispose and/or recycle their contents, see Household Hazardous Materials.
Q: Why didn’t Rumpke collect my recycling? I placed it in a corrugated cardboard box.
A: Rumpke drivers are not trained to look for recyclables in a cardboard box. They are looking for the red recycling bins while on their routes. If they see a box that has not been broken down and cut into 3′ X 3’ pieces, they assume that it is garbage. All recycling that is not in the red bin must be clearly marked RECYCLABLES and in plain sight when the drivers go by.
Q: Why types of materials are recyclable?
A: Rumpke will accept the following materials in their recycling program: • Paper (this including mixed paper and newspaper) • Glass (all colors) • Aluminum Beverage Cans (flatten cans to reserve space in your bin) • Tin/Metal Cans (please remove the lids because they cannot be recycled) • Plastics (which include milk jugs, soft drinks, detergent, and fabric softener containers – please rinse and flatten to reserve space in your bins) • Corrugated cardboard (break down and cut into 3′ X 3′ pieces). • For complete details, download the current Waste and Recycling Flyer.
Q: Why can’t we recycle ALL plastic containers? Why just bottles?
A: Bottles (those having a “neck” that is narrower than the base, usually with a screw on type top) and other containers of the same resin code (i.e. HDPE) are actually different and cannot be recycled together. For example, resin code #2 appears on many types of both blow-molded containers (bottles) and injection molded containers (tubs). Blow molding requires plastics with low viscosity or melt-flow index while injection molding requires a higher melt-flow index. To maintain these properties in recycled resin, the two container types cannot be recycled together. While there are a few processors of the non-bottle type containers around the country, we do not have a local end use market for this type of plastic. Q: Can my old computer be recycled?
A: Computers contain harmful materials. Each computer monitor may contain as much as eight pounds of lead. Circuit boards contain heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury and chromium. Plastic housings contain PCBs. Milford residents can call Cincinnati Computer Cooperative at 771-3262 to receive additional information about the Computer Recycling Service available. Acceptable items include: computer monitors, cords, processing units, computer speakers, scanners, parts, keyboards, and mice. Residents are reminded they may also make a tax-deductible donation of useable equipment to a number of charitable organizations. See organizations that will accept computers.
Q: My recycling bin is broken or damaged. What do I do?
A: If the container is actually split, cracked or damaged, it will be replaced at no charge, simply call the Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator and explain the situation and arrangements will be made for the replacement bin to be picked up at City Hall.
Q: I will be moving soon. What do I do with the recycling bin?
A: The city-issued recycling bins are issued to the property. Please leave the recycling bin in the rear yard or garage of the residence when you move. Also read about trash generated by moving.
Q: How can I save 25% of the room in my garbage can for garbage that must be land filled?
A: Recycle! If you are not already recycling you are missing a great opportunity to divert approximately 25% (by volume) of the materials from the garbage can over to the recycling bin. Did you know we can recycle newspaper, any white paper, magazines, catalogs, all plastic bottles, aluminum and metal food and beverage cans and all glass food containers? Don’t have a recycling bin? Q: Does the City of Milford organize any cleanups for streets and neighborhoods?
A: Yes, volunteers and neighbors can work together to help clean up their neighborhoods and rid the alleys and vacant lots of unsightly litter and debris. In order to offer all neighborhoods this opportunity, neighborhoods will be limited to two City of Milford cleanups per 12-month period.
Q: What holidays does Rumpke observe that may cause the route to change?
A: Typical holiday changes are:
